Principle-Based Nutrition

Establishing the correct macronutrient balance helps create a solid foundation for optimal nutrition. The following Unicity Nutrition Principles, developed with input from our USAB, help guide the development of many Unicity products and programs.

Prioritize Protein

Protein is the large, complex set of molecules that serves as the body’s building blocks. Eating a sufficient amount of protein keeps you feeling full, builds and maintains healthy muscle and bone, reduces the tendency to overeat, and creates little to no insulin response.

Control Carbohydrates

A carb is the starch, fiber, and sugar that the body uses as a quick-burning energy source. By getting smart about which carbs you eat and when you eat them, insulin levels fall and enable the body to use stored fat for energy.

Fuel with Fat

Fat is an essential macronutrient that the body uses to absorb vitamins, promote heart and brain health, and boost energy. Fat creates no insulin response and digests slower than carbohydrate, so it keeps you feeling full—these properties make fat the body’s ideal energy source.

4-4-12

Unicity recommends a form of intermittent fasting referred to as 4-4-12. By waiting four to six hours between breakfast and lunch, four to six hours between lunch and dinner, and 12-16 hours between dinner and breakfast, the body is given the time it needs to use stored fat as its fuel.

Ask Your Questions!

Can’t I just consume dietary fiber from food instead of taking fiber supplements?

Food processing tends to eliminate a lot of beneficial fiber from food, and, as a result, many people don’t get enough fiber in their diets. With our unique blend of soluble and insoluble fiber, you will receive benefits that support healthy cholesterol levels, a healthy digestive system, and a curbed appetite. In addition, you will receive vitamins and minerals that are not present in normal dietary fiber.

If I’m increasing my fat intake, am I burning stored fat or dietary fat?

The quick answer is both so long as you are following the Unicity Nutrition Principles.

The body accesses energy in this order: blood glucose, blood fat, stored glucose, and stored fat. This is why we recommend extending the amount of time in the Fat Burning Zone. Following the nutrition principles, particularly 4-4-12, allows you to access the stored fat as quickly as possible. By keeping insulin low, you enhance metabolic flexibility.

What products can be used by pregnant or nursing women?

Unicity recommends that anyone nursing or pregnant consult with their physician before using any nutritional supplements.

How much protein should I be eating every day?

That depends on your goals and lifestyle. The short answer is that 10-35% of your daily calories should come from protein. For a 2000-calorie diet, the range would be 50-175 grams of protein. Some research suggests that individuals looking to lose weight or support a more active lifestyle should consume closer to 35%. We recommend speaking with your physician to determine the best amount for you.
